Few Tips on How to Master a Video Interview

Nowadays, many companies can be seen leaning towards technology to fulfil their hiring needs. Video interviews allow hiring managers and recruiters to complete interviews quicker than conventional methods. Also, given the current scenario, many companies are opting to conduct online job interviews as opposed to in-person interviews. But the question is - how should one ace a video interview? For this, there are certain tips that you can follow to have a successful video interview. Here’s what we recommend: -
1. Practice make a man perfect
Think of this interview as a face-to-face interview only. Make sure to practice your answers in advance. If you are going to have the video interview in your house, pick a spot beforehand to make sure that the background and the lighting is apt. Check that your microphone/earphones are working properly. You can then go ahead and practice in this spot before the start of the interview.
2. Check all necessary things
If you are planning to use a tablet or laptop, ensure that the device is completely charged on the interview day. Also, make sure that your Wi-Fi connection is strong. Make it a point to check the connection one more time (10-15 minutes before your interview commences).
While planning for the video interview, refrain from using a small device or a smartphone. Go for a device that has a bigger screen. In case you are planning to use a tablet, ensure you place it in a stationary position during the interview.
A few things are to be taken care of while giving the video interview as well. Ensure that your face is not too close or too far away from the camera. Also, figure out how to turn on the sound or video before your interview meet. This is because otherwise, it will only give an impression that you are unprepared. Set up everything before the start of the video interview so that there is no room for mistakes.
3. Check and clear any distraction
As tablet and computer microphones generally pick up any kind of noise in a room, ensure you pick a quiet room if you are appearing for the interview at home. Avoid choosing that area of the house where you can easily get disturbed by outdoor noises. Also, turn off your phone and/or any alerts that could appear on your tablet or computers to avoid any distractions during the interview. The room you choose should be clean and without any clutter.
4. Dress up for the interview
Even for a video interview, you must dress up like you would if you were going for an in-person interview. This means, dressing up head-to-toe. Also, do not wear any flashy colours and select options that make you feel confident and at ease.
5. Focus on your body language
In a video interview, ensure you are making eye contact with the person you are speaking to. Maintain a good posture and use gestures the way you would use in an in-person interview.
In case your Wi-Fi connection is not strong, hand gestures can get delayed. So, a thing that you can try to do is to position your hands on the lap as much as you can
6. Prepare some questions
To come across interested and engaged in a video interview, you can make yourself seem curious by asking as many questions as you can. So, make sure you are ready with those questions before the interview. You can even keep a notepad near you to write down their answers.
Irrespective of whether it is a video interview or an in-person interview, remember that as a job seeker, your goal remains the same – to show them that you are the right fit for the job. So, practice, practice, and practice everything before the interview and you will surely ace it.
