A good manager can be the difference between a successful and unsuccessful team. If you are a manager who is not just in it for the pay-check and actually want to make a difference in the workplace, then you need to be a leader who positively influences the team. Whether your team has five people or fifty, being a manager is a role of responsibility.

This is not a dictatorship and to be an effective manager, you need to be able to work with your team, showing them the required leadership and authority. Being a manager is about leading your team efficiently, sharing the accolades, and weathering the storm together when the going gets tough.
Without the relevant experience of leading a team, a lot of people find it hard to step up as a manager. Experience is quite important to be able to understand the mechanics of a team of diverse people. For experience, even small steps like managing a team project, to volunteer in your field, managing or producing events, etc. can help you a lot.
Your Ability to Communicate
While communication is a skill that is required for all fields and roles, it is of high importance for being a good manager. This does not only refer to being able to communicate expectations and job responsibilities to the team but also being able to listen to the people you are responsible for in order to be able to produce results and solutions as and when required.
Subject Matter Expertise
While one can grow through the ranks solely on the basis of experience, knowledge about management will not go amiss. There are many degree programs that you can pursue for a managerial role, which will not only give you the knowledge but also allow you to network with the right people.
Being organised in your position allows you to ensure that your team too can work in an organised manner. The proper functioning of a team removes the risks of ambiguity, missed tasks, improper management, etc.
Proper Time Management
Time management as well as discipline are key factors behind being a successful manager. You are the one setting an example for your team and you will be the one setting up the standards for how to act in the professional setting. Also, in order to ensure that your team is efficient and on schedule, your time management skills need to be exemplary.
If you are leading a team, you need to show that you are reliable. You need to be available for your team, be accessible in case they face issues, do what you promise to accomplish and support the team as needed.

While you need to be reliable, you also need to be able to properly delegate tasks to your team. Even if you think it’s easier to accomplish a particular task yourself, don’t be afraid to delegate to your employees. Good managers do not run up and do everything by themselves; they know how to delegate tasks to the right people in the team.
An effective manager needs to be confident in their experience, decisions, and abilities. You should never let this skill turn into overconfidence, arrogance, or feeling as though you are better than your team, but you need to be certain about your skills so that you can be an inspiration for the rest of the team.
Respect Your Employees
Avoid tension in the workplace and always have proper respect for your employees. You need to be cognizant of your employees’ abilities, listen and communicate with them, and be a source of guidance for them. Respect goes a long way in maintaining a good team culture.
As a manager, you can make or break the team you have. You can build up a team, hone your team members’ skills, be conducive to their concerns and feedback, and help them grow. Or, you can be the manager that everyone dreads to work under. Bear in mind that the choice is entirely yours, but the long-term impact of it will be collective.
